A Quick Write is a short response (2-10 minutes) to an open-ended question or prompt. This strategy is an excellent way for students to practice responding to an open-ended question connected to a text and using text evidence in their response.
Strategy Steps:
- Students read a text.
- The teacher provides an open-ended question, such as “What is the most important thing you learned about Percy in Chapter 1? How did the author show this about Percy? Write in complete sentences and provide one specific example as evidence from the text.”
- Give students 2 to 10 minutes to write their response depending on the question.
- Lastly, use the rubric to score your students’ writing and provide actionable feedback.
You can choose not to grade quick writes, or you can use a rubric to grade quick writes quickly. You can download the quick write rubric I use with my students below.
The quick write strategy is meant to be used as a spiral strategy. Meaning students will use this strategy throughout the year and will grow in their writing throughout the year.
