Thank you for the choice boards!
What is your word bag?
The word bag words are the state vocabulary words. Each week students receive a set of words to write on their index cards. They write the word on one side and the definition on the other side. Students must know how to read the word, explain the word, and give an example. I found many of my students new the words verbally, but not visually.
I love to help out other teachers. Let me know if you need anything else!
Is there a reason why you refer to the list of state vocabulary words as “word bag words”? Just wondering if there is a bag? I like your idea of the students learning a few with each selection. How do the students store the index cards as they collect a large supply of words?
The reason I call them word bag words is because they store the words in a zip lock bag. My current sixth graders have over 150 words they have learned over the past year or so. (I loop with 5th and 6th grade) We had to replace the zip lock bags, but they still have their cards. Since I started the word bag I have seen an increase in student ability to use academic vocabulary in discussions and their writing, as well as their test scores have improved.
Just found your site! I'm new to the menu board adventure. Do you have anything for 4th grade Reading Street? Thanks!
What is a vocabulary frame? I have seen it mentioned in a couple of your option boards.
I agree! I'd love some fourth grade resources, if you have any! I also LOVE the idea of Word bag words!
I have added the Vocabulary frame that I refer to in my choice boards at the bottom of the page. I do not make copies each week. Students have an example of a vocabulary frame and use it to make a new one for each assignment. Let me know if I can help any further.
I'm sorry I do not have any 4th grade resources, but this site http://www.scottsboro.org/~flewis/index.html has a great number of 4th grade resources.
