Show & Tell Linky: Literacy Design Collaborative



    

      I am joining Rubby Slippers for her weekly Show and Tell linky. I’ve had a lot of great opportunities to grow as an educator this summer. Today, I started my journey as a curator for the TN Gates Curator project. A great resource I was introduced to today was Literacy Design Collaborative. The site has modules, tasks, courses, and mini-tasks and they are all free. These lessons are created by teachers for teachers. 


The site is user friendly. You must sign up for an account, but it is free. You can search  based on grade level, activity duration, discipline, skill, and type. There is something here for ELA, Science, and Social Studies teachers. If you haven’t checked it out….you are missing out.

Laptop Charging Station for the Classroom!

DIY Charging Station for the classroom
The charging station for the class laptops was quick and easy to put together. Each computer, power cord, and tray have matching washi tape. The charging station lets students know exactly where to put each laptop and which power cord goes to which laptop. This fix made the laptop mess in the classroom much neater and more manageable for students.

    Freebie Friday

Technology Thursday: Awesome Apps for Teachers



    I am joining Teaching Trio for Technology Thursday. I have had a wonderful time at TETA.  I’ve learned so much this week and I still have one more day.  I wanted to share a few apps that I was introduced to today! 
The first app is called AR Flashcards. They have a couple different  paid versions, but the Alphabet version is free! I found this awesome video that shows what this awesome app does! 
This new kind of technology is called augmented reality.  If you search the App Store you find various types of augmented reality apps. 
Another awesome augmented reality app works with the 2013 and 2014 Guinness World Record Books!  The Guinness World Record App is free, so you only need to pay for the book. 
        Lastly, I want to share Grade Cam with you. Using bubble sheets you can print yourself, Gradecam allows you to grade multiple choice assignments  By logging in on your desktop 
computer you can then transfer the scores to your grade book with the touch of a button! The app is free for up to ten question quizzes. You can upgrade for up to 100 question quizzes. I really love the reports that are available. I love data and this provides lots of data.

     A few months ago I blogged about my accountable talk bubbles. You can read about them here. I first printed the accountable talk bubbles in various colors. To keep my awesome zebra theme going, I created new accountable talk bubbles in zebra. I also created two other designs for non-zebra loving. Each set is free for my readers!

You Should Apply for that Grant!



            I was so excited a few week ago to find out that I received a Wal-mart grant I applied for.. I didn’t receive the full amount that I requested, but I received 500.00! I went to Walmart last night and spent three hours deciding how I was going to spend the money on my classroom.

Look at all those school supplies! I’ve listed under each picture what I was able to purchase.

I was able to purchase 5 clipboards, 10 packs of page protectors, a wireless keyboard, 6 legal pads, cute cut-outs for the kids lockers, a heavy duty hole punch and 3 packs of neon index cards

A laptop!!!! A wireless mouse, 48 lead pencils, 24 glue sticks, 4 sharpies, lots of command strip products, 100 pencils, 2 back of binder clips, 4 packs of markers, and white out.

Lastly, 5 packs of paper, label maker refill, post-it tabs, 24 expo markers, laminator machine, 100 laminator packets,  10 CDs, 6 packs of colored paper, and a case of paper! 
  Now it is your turn to have a shopping spree. To apply for the grant I applied for go here. I applied for the community grant.  You will need the following before you start: 
  • An idea: What do you want to do with your students? 
  • Amount: How much do you need to complete to your project? (You may not get all you request, but some is always great)
  • Tax Exempt information
      I hope to hear about some awesome teachers getting some grants for their classrooms.

Prefix Practice Cards for Whole Group or Centers (Free download)

Prefix and Suffixes are critical for vocabulary instruction. I’ve created prefix cards for teaching in my classroom. Each page has a prefix and then its definition. I use them to introduce a prefix each day. Then we review them as we add more! I also add magnets on the back to stick to my whiteboard. I give the students the prefix card and definition to sort for one of my centers. Then they take a picture of their finished product with the class IPad. They name the image the name of their group to review their work. 
I made zebra for myself, but I also created a couple of others for my non-zebra-loving fans. Teachers can use the set on word walls, centers, or whole group instruction. Download the cards below, and please share how you will use these cards in your classroom in the comment box!
