Where to Find Articles for Article of the Week (AoW)

Article of the week AOL

I have searched the Internet looking for great resources for teachers to use to find an article to use in their classroom to update a post from 2014. I found the following pages that have articles, and some sites also have questions and prompt to go along with the articles. Please let me know if you know of another resource I should add.

  • Read Works: ReadWorks provides research-based units, lessons, and authentic, leveled non-fiction and literary passages directly to educators online, for free! K-8
  • TweenTribuneA Free K-12 Resource for Teachers to find daily AP news articles with self-scoring quizzes customized by Lexile® level.
  • Kelly Gallagher: You will find the articles Kelly assigned this year (2019-2020) to his students for free
  • Vale Middle: Article of the Week handouts and articles for 19-20.

I was introduced to a new free educational website. Smithsonian Tween Tribune  is a K-12 site with news articles. The reasons I love this site are:

  • You can change the Lexile level of articles.
  • You can assign quizzes based on the articles.
  •  You can search for articles by Lexile level.
  • Lexile levels range from 500-1600.
  • Students can be added to your class to allow the students to comment on articles. (Great for having a class discussion, which can be only seen by your class or made public by the teacher)
  • They have certificates for students success on quizzes,
  •  The articles are chosen by professional journalists.
  • They have articles in Spanish.

Now that you know why I love this site check it out for yourself by clicking here.

Check out the updated post here

I have been searching all over the Internet looking for great resources for teachers to use to find an article to use in their classroom. I do at least one close reading with an article each week in my class. Here are the sites I use to find the articles:

  • Read Works: ReadWorks provides research-based units, lessons, and authentic, leveled non-fiction and literary passages directly to educators online, for free! K-8
  • Vale Middle School: This site has articles and questions for Lexile level 900 and up. Free
  • Kelly Gallagher:  This site has articles and questions. The articles are assigned to high school students, but many could be used for middle school too. Free
  • Teaching the Core: This site has excellent articles for middle schoolers. Free

As I find more sites with articles, I will update the post. If you have any sites, please comment with the website below.
